Before You Buy Grocery Store Beef, Read This...

From the desk of Mia Cherp, owner of Hyndman Peak Cattle Co. If you currently buy your beef from a big name grocery store, then you need to be aware of some pretty scary facts and a guide towards an alternative option for your family.

99% of the Beef at your Local Grocery Store is produced under Big Ag.

The short version: Beef is under attack... With just four major corporations: Cargill, Tyson Foods, JBS USA, and National Beef Packaging Co. controlling about 90% of the U.S. beef market, leading to a near-monopoly that stifles competition and leaves ranchers with few options to sell their cattle. We will refer to this as "Big Ag" or (Big Agriculture) moving forward.

Around the world, there are active initiatives to develop lab based meats, change the molecular structure of the beef we are eating, and control the small farmers. The simplest way to fight back is to stop participating. Find a local farmer and buy their beef.

Pink Slime and Misleading Practices:

Trimmings of 1000's of animals: Ground beef produced by Big Ag can contain DNA from thousands of different animals, raising concerns about contamination and consistency and internal opposition from USDA microbiologists. (Our Farm Fresh Beef Contains DNA From a Single Animal Source)

"Pink Slime": The industry masks the potential of contamination by exposing the trimmings to ammonium hydroxide gas impacting its color and resistance to spoilage. The industry calls it Lean Finely textured Beef (LFTB) also know as "pink slim."

Misleading Labeling Practices & Greenwashing in the Beef Industry

In the beef industry, "greenwashing" refers to the deceptive practice of marketing beef.

"Antibiotic-Free" and "Hormone-Free" Claims: Labels claiming "antibiotic-free" and "hormone-free" often have loopholes. For instance, "no antibiotics ever" means the animal was never given antibiotics, but other labels might simply mean that the antibiotics were withdrawn a certain period before slaughter.

"Grass-Fed" Labels: True "grass-finished" beef, where cattle eat grass their entire lives, offers different nutritional benefits. Using "grass-fed" broadly misleads consumers who might think they are buying entirely grass-fed beef, however, they might still be finished on grain, which means they are fattened on a diet of grain before slaughter.

"All Natural" Labels: The label "all natural" is often used to imply that the beef is of superior quality and free from additives. However, the USDA allows this label on beef that has been minimally processed and contains no artificial ingredients. This term can be used even if the cattle were raised with conventional methods, leading consumers to believe they are buying a healthier, more environmentally friendly product when this might not be the case

Product of the USA... Maybe..?

Product of USA Labels: One of the most pervasive misleading practices is the use of "Product of USA" labels. This label can be used on beef that is processed in the U.S. but sourced from cattle born and raised in other countries. This practice deceives consumers into believing they are purchasing domestically raised beef, which may not be the case...

How to Buy Direct From an American Ranch?

You’ve Already Found Us!

Congratulations, you’re halfway there! Now that you've found us, here’s how you can ensure you’re buying your beef from a ranch that values quality and transparency:

Do Your Due Diligence: Not all beef is created equal. Take the time to research the ranch. Look for information about their farming practices, how they raise their cattle, and their commitment to quality. Check for reviews or testimonials from other customers.

Ask the Right Questions: Reach out to the ranch and ask about their methods. How are the cattle raised and fed? Are they grass-fed, grain-finished, or both? What kind of environment do they live in? Transparency is key, and a reputable ranch will be happy to answer all your questions.

Understand the Process: Buying direct means you’ll often need to purchase in bulk. Here’s how it works when ordering from Hyndman Peak Beef:

  • Choose Your Share: Select the size of your beef share, whether it’s 1/8, 1/4, or 1/2 beef share Each option provides a variety of cuts.
  • Place Your Order: Once you've decided, place your order directly with the ranch. Many ranches like ours offer online ordering systems and flexible payment plans.
  • Delivery and Storage: After processing, you’ll be contacted for delivery details. Make sure you have enough freezer space to store your purchase.

Enjoy Premium Quality: Once your beef arrives, you can start enjoying the superior taste and nutritional benefits of locally raised beef.

Why Buy in Bulk?

Buying beef in bulk offers numerous advantages that go beyond just filling your freezer. Here’s why it’s a smart choice:

Cost Savings: Purchasing beef in bulk is more economical compared to buying smaller quantities from the grocery store. You get a lower price per pound, which can add up to significant savings over time.

Quality Assurance: When you buy in bulk directly from a trusted ranch, you ensure that all your beef comes from a single source. This means you can be confident about the quality, consistency, and handling of your meat.

Convenience: Having a variety of cuts on hand means you’re always prepared for any meal. Whether it’s a quick weeknight dinner or a special occasion, you’ll have everything you need without multiple trips to the store.

Health Benefits: Bulk beef from a reputable source is often healthier. It’s free from unnecessary antibiotics and hormones, and you can choose grass-fed or grain-finished options based on your preference.

Transparency: Buying direct from the ranch allows you to ask questions and learn about how the cattle are raised. This transparency ensures you’re getting beef that aligns with your values and dietary needs.

In summary, buying beef in bulk is a practical and rewarding choice that benefits your wallet, your health, and your local farming/ranching community. Enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have a stockpile of high-quality, nutritious beef ready whenever you need it.
